There is a tale about a neighbour who once knocked on a lazy man’s door. He told the lazy man of a job he could get but that required the lazy man to go after it; “Ummm…”, said the lazy man, “it appears that considerable effort will be involved.”
“Oh yes!” said the neighbor, “You will have to spend a day getting yourself groomed and looking for the right clothes. You will also have to spend a sleepless night reading for your interview. But I guarantee you, it is a great chance for advancement.” “Ummm…” said the lazy man, “…and who are you by the way?” The man replied in surprise, “I am Mr Opportunity, your neighbour.” The lazy man looked at him and said, “You look like my uncle named Hard Work. Don’t bother me!” And he slammed the door on his uncle Hard Work lookalike!
An opportunity is an occasion that presents itself to you and gives you the option of either seizing it or not following through with it. You have nothing to lose by seizing an opportunity that comes your way. Every opportunity positively impacts your life. Opportunities are there to bring growth, development and progress in your life. They are also a chance to learn even from mistakes.
Too often, opportunities can come and pass you by while you contemplate. Most people frequently find themselves filled with regret over missed opportunities. Have you ever said to yourself, “If only I had…“? Have you ever filled your mind with imaginations of what could have been? Such moments indicate missed opportunities although they should not deter you in the future. Let go of them. They belong in the past. Focus on the road ahead and be determined not to miss any more opportunities.
Many opportunities can come your way but you need to be sensitive to your surroundings. You also need to have the right attitude. One man said, “An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity; a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity“. You must look at your environment from the eyes of a positive attitude in order to identify opportunities.
God can bring great opportunities for your development through many ways. It can be through your church, your job or even your home. It can be through your service and giving to others. God can also use people, circumstances and even your trials to bring about your development. However, you are required to have faith, the right attitude and put the right effort for you to harness those opportunities.
Elisha had the great opportunity of walking under Elijah’s guidance. He received a double portion of the anointing that was upon Elijah’s life (2 Kings 2:9). Gehazi also had the opportunity to walk under Elisha’s guidance and yet Gehazi failed to harness the opportunity presented before him and never received an impartation from Elisha. Elisha went to the grave with his anointing. He even raised a man to life in his grave (2 Kings 13:21).
Be determined not to miss important opportunities in your life. Be positive – Be alert. Above all ask God, working through the Holy Spirit, to guide you and counsel you on the way you should go, the choices you should make and the opportunities you should seize.
