Apple has announced a new iMac Pro that is a beast… well compared to all other Apple computers and quite frankly for most users in Zimbabwe at least. Before we delve into the new iMac, you may be wondering what WWDC stands for…?
WWDC is Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference where developers can attend sessions and meet with over 1,000 Apple engineers. The event includes a first-day keynote where Apple typically introduces upcoming software and occasionally new hardware. The 2017 conference was held on June 5–9 in San Jose, California. Tickets were priced at $1,599. WWDC sold out for the first time in 2008, and by 2013 tickets for the event were selling out in just two minutes. Starting in 2014, Apple moved to a lottery system, and the company has continued to use that system since then. This is the first time since 2002 that Apple has held WWDC in San Jose.
Now back to this beast of an iMac that Apple is calling the iMac Pro that will feature an 18 core processor and 5K display for a starting price of US$4,999.00. As you can imagine this is not necessarily a machine you buy just to do Facebook or Google deals from FindaDiscount for example… we… unless you have money to burn! This machine is ideal for video editors, 3D animators, musicians, software developers, gamers… I am sure you get the picture now; it’s ideally for professionals or “heavy users”.
According to apple it will be available in December 2018 and will feature:
- 18 cores!!!
- Turbo Boost speeds up to 4.5GHz
- Up to 42MB cache
- Vega graphics – Radeon Pro Vega is over three times faster than any previous iMac GPU
- On-package HBM2 replaces external VRAM, so
Apple also announced new releases to the MacBook Pro and other Apple computers and gadgets during WWDC. I guess with this machine earmarked to start at $4999 in the US, we can expect it to start at about $7,250.00 in Zimbabwe (covering my eyes!!!). At this price point I doubt if we will see that many available in the stores… time will tell. I was shocked that entry level Mac Books were going for almost $1900 but folks are buying them at those prices… SMH! They go for $1299 in the US and about ZAR21 499 (approximately US$1,669.65 at the time of publishing this article)!!!
Apple’s loyal fans don’t really care about the price. It’s an Apple!!!
