At about 7:40pm tonight, most of Zimbabwe was rocked by an earth tremor due to an earthquake with a magnitude 6.5 (according to the U.S. Geological Survey, ready.gov) that occurred 131km W of Moijabana, Botswana at 17:40:15.63 UTC on Apr 3, 2017 (Today!!!). The tremors in Harare were so strong that they visibly shook housewares although we have not noted any reports of damage to property on social media or other news media.
Social media is buzzing with people’s experiences with one entertaining experience where kids ran out of the house thinking there was a ghost inside. There are many reports of people feeling and seeing windows, doors and other property shaking for about 30-40 seconds during the tremors.
One has to wonder if Zimbabwe is still safe from earthquakes as suggested by previous reports. Perhaps it’s time to start thinking about educating citizens on how to prepare and respond to earthquakes. Whatever the case is, if these tremors become a frequent experience, we may see new laws drafted to ensure that new buildings meet new regulations that will protect lives in the event of a full scale earthquake in Zimbabwe.
Ever wonder what an earthquake is in Shona and Ndebele?
1) Shona: Kudengenyeka kwenyika
2) Ndebele: Yikuzamaza komhlaba
Did you experience the tremors in your region? Which part of Zimbabwe are you in?
