THE HOUSE OF BOOKS
Publishers & Book Sellers
The House of Books is a family-owned business which has been proudly publishing books to promote Zimbabwe since 2009. We set out with the goal of making a book to show off our beautiful country in all of its splendour. It turns out that was a message many people wanted to hear. Our first publication sky-rocketed our humble book to an international best-seller. Now, we are looking to nurture local talent and expand our operation to represent every walk of life that Zimbabwe has to offer.
From education, tourism, history, to local stories, children’s books, and coffee-table treasures, we are delivering the highest quality publications at an international standard. Zimbabwe has long been in the shadow of war, turmoil, and a soiled public image. People on the outside forget it is one of the safest, untouched, and beautiful countries that Africa has to offer. Our goal is to remind the world that there is beauty and potential here worth seeing and experiencing. Above all, we love our great nation and want to see it prosper.
Since 1994, The House of Books was a simple book shop in Harare’s suburb of Borrowdale. We imported, collected and sold the largest variety of trade and antique books in the entire country. Later, we opened bookshops at Harare and Victoria Falls International Airports and these shops shifted their focus to promoting Zimbabwean books to the many tourists visiting our fair land.
Our Publishing Team
Production Director and Co-Founder
Better known around Zimbabwe by his nickname ‘Mita’, this man has been an institution unto himself for almost 40 years. He has been the director or owner of 7 major businesses, employing and supporting hundreds of employees and donating to charitable foundations and projects since before he had the money to buy his own home.
Mita is famous in many circles for his patience, persistence and good humour. These qualities are what have made The House of Books a success. Without him, the publishing house which has produced so many best-selling works would have remained just an idea. This work is Mita’s passion project. He dedicates vast amounts of his time and energy to ensure that every step of the publishing process is running smoothly, and he makes it look easy.
Creative Director and Co-Founder
Snezana is the reason The House of Books exists. With enough books in her collection to fill several stores, she has an encyclopaedic knowledge of literature and history, and a passion for the written word that few alive can claim or rival. This discerning eye has ensured that the books we produce maintain the high standards held by global publishing brands in both content and quality.
Her talent has also allowed us to find unprecedented success with each publication, because she not only judges perfectly what would make a good book but also finds the gap in the market that book can fill in the first place. It was true for our flagship title, Visions of Zimbabwe, and it remains true almost a decade and a dozen projects later.
Dunja is a design phenom. She designed every single book in our catalogue and was the sole artist in our best-selling children’s book, Zimbabwe Z-to-E. Her speed, enthusiasm and unflappable nature make her perfect for the inevitable re-designing and tweaking that has to occur when any project is taking shape. She knows it is impossible to see inside a person’s head to understand their vision, so she shapes it for them step by step, helping them along until it is perfect. It also helps that she does it all with a beaming smile.
Stewart has a talent that is rare and special. His photography skills are arguably without peer in the country, and doubly impressive is the fact that, in his eyes, the camera is merely a hobby. A successful businessman, Stewart has found the time to both photograph for and visually edit many of our most successful works. Even in his spare time, while scaling mountains or exploring distant lands, he is snapping away thousands of photos, looking to share this love of the natural world with his many readers.
