National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) was created through an Act of Parliament in 1985 and has been ‘Championing’ the promotion and development of the arts sector by providing support, initiating arts programmes and forging partnerships with key stakeholders in the arts and culture sector.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) was created through an Act of Parliament in 1985 and has been ‘Championing’ the promotion and development of the arts sector by providing support, initiating arts programmes and forging partnerships with key stakeholders in the arts and culture sector.

NACZ has a Head Office which is housed in Harare and Murewa Culture Centre at Murewa Centre. NACZ also has 10 offices country wide in the Provincial capitals to ensure that it interacts and share ideas with artists and arts & culture organisations for the development and promotion of the sector. The provincial offices have at least a Provincial Arts Manager and a Programme Officer who ensures that NACZ roles and functions are fulfilled. Murewa Culture Centre can also offer specialised workshops and arts-in-residencies. 


The main function of National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) is to foster, develop and improve the knowledge, understanding and practice of the arts and their presentation, performance, execution and the exhibition of the same to various publics.

NAMA Awards

The National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) is the premier award  given by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) in recognition of outstanding achievements in the arts and culture. 

Since the inaugural NAMA in February 2002, NAMA award ceremonies have been held in February of each year to recognise artists who would have excelled in the previous year. NAMA has reviewed its categories for the 15th Edition and beyond after carrying some country wide consultative forums.

Jikinya Dance Festival

Jikinya Dance Festival showcases various traditional dances by primary school pupils from around the country. The festival is held annually and aims at encouraging children to appreciate and perform Zimbabwean traditional dances thus promoting and preserving Zimbabwe’s rich cultural intangible heritage which is faced with disappearance.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) inaugurated Jikinya Dance Festival in 2002 and the festival is mainly sponsored by Delta Corporation and Culture Fund Trust. The major partner is National Association of Primary School Heads (NAPH).

Culture Week Festival

This is a national arts and culture festival to celebrate World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development proclaimed by UNESCO as 21st May. Zimbabwe celebrates this over a week. NACZ encourage communities and stakeholders alike to hold events that celebrate their culture. The national official Culture Week launch is a national event coordinated by National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) Head Office and implemented by the hosting province.

Jerusalema Mbende Dance Festival

A festival that celebrates the Jerusarema Mbende dance that was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage for Humanity by UNESCO in 2005.  It is performed by the community of Murewa and Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe (UMP) in the North Eastern Districts of Zimbabwe.

The National Arts and Culture dialogue commonly referred to as Indaba is a forum held annually, bringing together captains and leaders in the arts and culture sector to interact and share ideas. Issues discussed include those affecting the development and future of the sector, as well as taking stock of sector achievements.
