Situated in Ardbennie, on the outskirts of the city of Harare, the Chiedza Child Care Centre aims to provide a caring home for vulnerable children and to assist the carers of children in dire circumstances in the community with immediate needs while empowering them through income generating projects. The name Chiedza derives from the Shona name meaning light, appropriately underlining the positive philosophy and objectives which drive this project in the face of the daunting challenges of HIV/AIDS and poverty caused by deteriorated economic circumstances in Zimbabwe in the past few years.
The mission for Chiedza Child Care Centre is to support and care for vulnerable children in Zimbabwe. To this end the Centre has tailored programmes which involve caregivers, youths and children. Our vision is to be an efficient, caring and socially responsible provider and supporter of vulnerable children in Zimbabwe.
Chiedza Childcare Centre Programs
This offers education assistance to orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) in the form of school fees, uniforms and exercise books. The programme goes a step further by availing retired teachers to provide extra tutorials at the centre.
This programme empowers adults and children on child protection laws and procedures through workshops, awareness campaigns and meetings so that they take appropriate action, including seeking legal redress, where children’s rights are violated.
Early Childhood & Development
We strive to adhere to minimum ECD standard and curriculum to ensure access of high quality ECD services to the disadvantaged children. Chiedza already works in collaboration with Local Authority and communities to develop the ECD centres.
In order to understand what orphaned and vulnerable children are facing we look at both how a child develops and grows and the impact of death and bereavement on a child at different stages of their development.
The organisation is involved in training and advocacy activities in child protection in the community and at the centre. This is done to create a safe and friendly environment for children and youth.
Research and Advocacy
Chiedza carries out assessments on issues affecting children and document these findings which are then used to lobby and advocate for policy and law reform. In doing that, it liaises with various stakeholders who include children, law and policy makers.
Nutrition & Basic Health Care
By and large the major objective of food provision is to achieve primary prevention of any morbidity in children, which will be achieved through nutritional screening and HIV testing.
Youth Friendly Corner
(Adolescent and Sexual Reproductive health) – The initiative is aimed at empowering the youth so that they will be able to lead healthy life styles, make informed decisions and choices about their lives.
We have linked the Youth Friendly Corner to our livelihoods programme. We are equipping the youths with entrepreneurial skills to sustain their lives. Youths are engaged in various income generating initiatives of their choice.
Mbuya ne Muzukuru Initiative
This concept serves as a new crutch to meet the parents’/caregivers’ shortcomings in the area of training their children on facts of “growing up”. It also serves to bridge this “gap” by reviving lost culture in the area of sexual education and its moral direction.
