Crèche Selection: Choose the right one for your child

Most people think choosing a career or a lifetime partner are two of the hardest decisions they will ever make in life. While I don’t know for sure which one tops them all, I know that choosing the right crèche for your child is one of the most daunting exercises parents and caregivers will go through in their parenting roles. Choose the wrong school and your child will likely grow up to become an underachiever or just have delayed milestones in their life. It goes without saying that we all want the best for our children to ensure they are exceptionally prepared for excellence throughout their lives.

Thankfully the decision doesn’t need to be as stressful as it can be. I have written 5 tips to help you choose the right crèche for your child and hopefully create the most ideal foundation to the rest of their lives:

1. Visit the premises

To be able to truly understand the kind of care your child will receive, what material they will have access to, the level of sanitation, the size of the facility, to access whether your child will be stimulated and enjoy the environment; it is important to visit the premises.

2. Ask questions

Do not make assumptions, ask questions. I like the anecdote that there is no such thing as a stupid question – I think in the case of your child’s education this is absolutely true. It is important to be clear about what matters to you before you approach the administrator with questions. Use scenarios if you feel it is necessary. Make sure you are satisfied with the responses you received at the end of your meeting otherwise ask more questions or perhaps that is a sign of the environment.

It’s comforting to know that the teachers and staff can easily inform you about their institution; it could be a sign that they will more effectively attend to your child when they ask questions.

3. Be realistic. Be flexible.

No crèche will meet all your needs! I will repeat that again… No crèche will meet all your needs because nothing in this world is perfect. The teachers and caregivers are not perfect. The fee may not be perfect for you but remember a great service costs more. The idea is for you to send your child to an institution that you are comfortable will best prepare the critical education foundation for your child. You want a crèche that is close to your expectations or perhaps if you are lucky you could get one that exceeds your expectations… My point is that you won’t get exactly what you dreamed of so be prepared to accept some shortfalls while accepting where the crèche might exceed your expectations.

4. Keep in mind your child’s future education

Make sure that the curriculum being taught at the crèche meets the standards of the school you desire your child to attend after crèche at primary level. For example, if your desire is to enroll your child in a private school for Grade 1, then you need to make sure that the curriculum will adequately equip your child to gain entry to a private school. Try to be specific here so that you can fairly assess the crèche in terms of preparing your child for best chances into entry in your desired post crèche education institution.

5. Go with your gut

The truth is you will never know what your experience will be, whether positive or negative until your child is enrolled. Your gut can guide you. Sometimes you just can’t put your finger of it but something in your gut tell you ‘no’… then it may pay to listen to your gut. Likewise, sometimes your gut feeling is to give a crèche a try and in most cases your gut will be right. Just don’t play Russian roulette with your child’s future. Pick the crèche that you feel most positive about and meets most of your requirements.

When you are selecting a crèche for child, think of it as a game of Lego’s or Tetris, what your child gets to experience and is exposed to builds them and takes them to the next level. Their experience at crèche will prepare them to transition into primary school, which will lead them to high school and so on. All the while those pieces come together to build a whole, complete and progressive young adult.

It’s hard to come up with a sure way to help you choose the perfect crèche, but equipped with these tools, you are more likely to make a better decision than making the decision without knowledge of some of or all of the above guiding tips.
